The fix took about 20 minutes—or rather, 25 after the access panel fought me. The homeowner's alternative was a week without heat and a five-figure bill. Instead, they paid a service call and a $38 part.
The most frustrating part of calls like that: the first contractor didn't even open the access panel. You'd think a 'no heat' diagnosis would start by checking gas flow, but too often it starts with a pitch for replacement.

I've seen homeowners buy a Lasko fan to 'help the AC' during a heat wave. There's nothing wrong with a fan for spot cooling—Lasko makes decent ones. But if the filter is dirty and the coil is caked, that fan is just moving warm, dusty air around.
The question I ask before any efficiency upgrade: when was the last time the current system was cleaned and checked? If the answer is 'I don't know,' start there.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), efficiency claims like 'high efficiency' have to be truthful and backed by evidence. That's a good standard for contractors too. If I'm quoting a high-SEER system, I should be able to show you the AHRI certificate. If a contractor can't, treat the big number as a marketing line.

People often ask me about indoor air quality: 'Should I get a dehumidifier or an air purifier?' It's a fair question, but it's often the wrong one.
Most musty-smelling houses are moisture problems, not particle problems. A crawl space with standing water, a clogged condensate drain, or a humid return duct will smell bad no matter how many air purifiers you buy. A dehumidifier might help, but only after you fix where the moisture is coming from.
I once worked in a house with a $500 'medical grade' air purifier in the living room and a moldy evaporator coil in the basement. The purifier was doing nothing for the actual problem. The fix was cleaning the coil, fixing the drain slope, and adding a cheap condensate pump.
